whitfield. okay, tropical storm earl makes landfall in eastern canada downing power lines, sparking power outages and it's creating dangerous surf along the east coast in its wake. earl never did make landfall in the u.s., so now some u.s. beaches are open again, however, there are still some dangers in the surf. our team coverage begins right here, we're covering this storm or what's left of it. susan candiotti is live from cape cod, massachusetts, and our jacqui jeras right here in the weather city, let's begin with you. >> earl is over the gulf of st. lawrence now and moving very, very quickly up to the north into the east. here you can see nova scotia, there's maine for perspective. the storm moves up towards new finland and then eventually make its way out of there and become what we call extra tropical. 70-mile-per-hour winds, that can cause a lot of damage. so even though it's a tropical storm, you don't ever want to say just a tropical storm, because still plenty of damage. there you can see the path of where it continues to go and pull away from the united states. some of the win

's left of hurricane earl is losing strength as it moves through canada. it now is just a tropical storm dumping rain on nova scotia, new brunswick and prince edward island. it caused a few power outages in massachusetts. and a state of emergency is in effect in christchurch, new zealand. more than 24 hours after a major earthquake there. there are no reports of death so far, but damage is substantial. the 7.0 magnitude quake caused buildings and roads to crumble. an overnight curfew is in effect and new zealand's army has been called in to prevent looting. >>> and demonstratored marched in paris today, many held signs attacking president nicolas sarkozy. the protest was partly targeting gypsies, thousands have been returned to romania and bulgaria since the crack down began. they're worried about the stripping of citizenship of those accused of the crimes. now back to "building up america" and a look at what small businesses are doing to protect job as cross the country. >> reporter: sometimes building up comes down to a simple equation. a few people with a good idea who are willing to

was a hurricane, it's tropical storm now p about it's weakened, still there's a severe weather threat. canada's atlantic provinces are now dealing with the remnants of this storm. it's done graded like i said to a tropical storm status, but delivering still heavy rain, driving winds in nova scotia. at one point it was a category 4, went to a 3, then a 2, and it's pretty much broken up now, lost a lot of the steam as it was spinning northward, relatively cool waters in the atlantic ocean, but the storm still could make landfall this nova scotia where people are watching and waiting. >> we're beginning to get some rain, but before that, there was to rain at all. the winds certainly getting stronger. >> back here in the u.s. at least, people up and down the east coast dodged a bullet a lot would say, but now they're wondering what about my weekend? it's the holiday weekend. three day weekend. reynolds, how is this going to affect people not necessarily weather-wise, but there's something else they need to be watching out for. >> kind of indirectly. when you see these big storms approach, the win

. very close to canada and nova scot scotia. what we are seeing in this picture is something you can just barely make out. that would happen to be an area of low pressure, this kicked up right there. and at the same time, a frontal boundary that extends from it and that frontal boundary is going to help kick out that storm deeper into the atlantic and pushing it farther to the north out of harm's way. the question is where is it going to go? the latest path we have from the national hurricane center has it moving up towards nova scotia. i'm thinking landfall around noon. maybe a little bit beforehand. it's moving to the northeast at 30 miles per hour. just yesterday it was around 18 miles an hour. definitely has really increased its progress. certainly good news. the bad news is though, we still have a lot to deal with with this particular storm. you've got earl located right about here. going to put that down as an area of low pressure. at the same time, we have fiona, what is left of fiona, in this particular stop. those two entities, the issues now is you're going to have a lot of wave
